Communication for Development
OMASI plays a vital role in educating the semi-nomadic Maasai and other rural communities through Orkonerei FM Radio—the first community radio station ever established in Tanzania. Founded in 2002, it was also the first radio to be established and run by a rural community organization, with a mission to serve the Maasai people and their neighboring communities in Northern Tanzania. Since then, the station has become a trusted platform for accessible, culturally relevant information, reaching an estimated 1 million listeners across the region.
Orkonerei FM Radio blends traditional knowledge with modern insights to educate and engage communities on issues that directly impact their lives. Key topics covered include:
- Land rights and access to justice.
- Gender equality and women's empowerment.
- Climate change awareness and adaptation.
- Civic rights and citizen participation.
- Cultural heritage and preservation.
- Productive and sustainable livestock systems.
- Entrepreneurship and rural livelihoods.
- Affordable housing and community development.
By using familiar language and culturally relevant content, the station empowers communities with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, challenge harmful norms, and take collective action. More than just a broadcaster, Orkonerei FM Radio is a platform for dialogue and inclusion—giving voice to the voiceless and promoting social change from the grassroots level.
